Nokia and platforms in flames

Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia, has done something unusual in the corporate world and I think his gesture will create a mountain of comments in the media and certainly not all good.

This link seems to find a memorandum sent the entire company, denouncing the dramatic situation that is Nokia, advanced by the left, right, up and down the old competitors, the new (Apple and Google) and future ("in China make new terminals with the speed in which we prepared a Power Point presentation on the same "). The Chinese are quick, cheap and very good.

One of the most important data in the design process are the kinetics reaction. This elusive information is not always easy to find and may be defining when deciding on a university project topic.

Below are several ways to obtain reaction kinetics. Experimentally



* * Scientific papers (very detailed data for all parameters) Relatively easy to access through a university library.

* Thesis (Also very useful, very descriptive explanations) can be accessed through a university library, in some cases may take a while to be obtained in other abiertaemnte cases are available in PDF universities.

* Databases reactions.
Among these we have the following:
NIST (mostly gas-phase reactions)

SAGE (Biochemistry)
IUPAC (mostly gas-phase reactions of environmental interest)

* Patent (usually contain limited data, the examples can reveal concentrations and conversion under different conditions, to estimate some parameters if one uses a suitable model.)

* Thousands of other sources that come to mind (Textbooks , programs computer, manual of plants used for sale, etc)

Microsoft offers plugin for Word



Microsoft Generally one associates more with the marketing and business office software, and you'd think they do not have the slightest interest to benefit the stakeholders in science.
For this reason, the day February 2, 2011 we were very surprised to receive an e-mail revealing that Microsoft has released version 1.0 of a free pluguin word chemistry. The same is called chem4word lets you draw chemical formulas and contains additional data and compatibility with chemical databases.

We do not know how useful this tool is to facilitate the work of chemists, but apparently the developers see it as an application example of the new trend "semantics" where the data contain additional items that give more utility (in this case the name of each atom in the formula, for example). Apparently the group is interested in further developing the software to include with the formulas other related data such as spectroscopic peaks of a molecule.


The beta version was launched in 2010 at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society. version 1.0 was released on January 1.
